Nick Abruzere    

Hello Everyone, and it’s my pleasure to share with you technology trends and insights that I encounter as I travel and interact with Gaming and Luxury Resort IT Professionals from all over the world.

I joined MICROS Systems eight years ago and have been in the software solutions industry for twelve.  Since joining MICROS, I have focused solely on providing solutions specifically for our Casino and Luxury Resort partners.  Prior to joining MICROS, I was an IT Engineer at Westinghouse Electric, provider of Nuclear Power Plant Development and R&D.  I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Management Information Systems and  I was also a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity.  

When I am not on the road traveling for work, I enjoy spending time at home in Cleveland, Ohio with my wife or traveling somewhere new together.  Outside of that, you would find me on a golf course, fly fishing on a remote stream or working on new construction side project  with my father and brother .

I hope you find my entries valuable and interesting and I look forward to hearing from you on any of your technology experiences or questions.

Hello and Guten Tag, as you might notice my roots are also from a different country.

I have been with MICROS Systems for 7 years, started as an OPERA Sales & Catering Installer and later worked with the Central Systems team responsible for OPERA Sales Force Automation in our regional office in EAME. Before moving to Columbia, Maryland I was the Product Specialist for OPERA Sales & Catering, OPERA Sales Force Automation and all the other fun modules connecting to these products in EAME and am now for the North-American region. 

I have been all my life in the hospitality industry, grown up in the restaurant of my parents back home in Germany. After spending a year as an exchange student in Santa Fe, Texas, I have worked in various positions in Food & Beverage and Sales in different parts of Germany, in Denver, Colorado and the Dominican Republic. I have a dual degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management from the César Ritz College in Brig, Switzerland and Washington State University. 

Before joining MICROS Systems my experience with the technical side of software and hotel systems was rather limited. I won them over with my experience in the hospitality industry. I’d like to share a story with you about my MICROS interview: I was asked of how I imagined a database and my explanation was – think of a wall with lots of drawers and shelves. …If you take something out and put it back into the wrong box, you have a database crash. Not a technical explanation but that is what happens.

G’day, As you can tell I am not from around here!

I’ve been lucky enough to have seen the world and meet all sorts of hospitality experts in my 17 years with MICROS Systems Inc.  Having worked many positions in the hotel industry and at MICROS has given me a unique view of the industry.

After working at Fidelio GmBH as an Installer and Product Manager in the Australian Office, I packed my bags and headed to “the land of the free and the home of the brave” in 1999 to be part of the OPERA Development Group located in Naples, Florida.   It soon became apparent that we needed to get the word out about OPERA and I was tasked to meet that objective.  So in the last 9 years I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the best industry leaders both at MICROS and in our customer community whose efforts have driven OPERA to the success it has today.

As a daughter of a Chef, hospitality is in my blood and I am excited to be involved in the evolution of the hospitality industry.  It’s amazing over the last 15 years, how much hospitality technology has changed and MICROS has led the way. Remember, that MICROS was the first vendor to provide hotels with a thin client and enterprise model that most other players are still trying to achieve.

 MICROS’ longevity and success is directly linked to our continued dedication to our customers and to the industry.  From being a benefactor of such ground-breaking industry initiatives like HTNG, to our sustained participation in HFTP events, it’s easy to see why I am still with MICROS.   Participating in events like HITEC, IHMRS, the MICROS User Conference or Customers Conventions fuels my passion and commitment to MICROS and the hospitality industry. 

I look forward to sharing some of my thoughts and ideas with little humor and maybe some sports references. Cheers !

My father used to tell me “It’s not ‘work’ if you love what you do”. That pretty much sums up my thirteen years at MICROS. It’s been thirteen years of working with some of the largest brands and innovative entrepreneurs in the business.  I’m proud of the various educational degrees I’ve earned over the years, including a B.S. in Business, an M.S. in technology and an MBA. But the education I value the most has been gained in our customer’s hotels and restaurants, working with talented and dedicated people to build the best products in the industry.

Thirteen years at one company is a long time, but there is a good reason why many people stay at MICROS for so long.  Our culture is very unique. We’re a technology company, but also a hospitality company, and our staff is very passionate about both. Many of the people on my team have similar backgrounds as mine, coming to MICROS after years of working the front lines of the industry. We value this experience and apply it to everything we do.  It’s this unique blend of hospitality and technology that keeps us here, keeps us motivated and keeps us striving for excellence.

I’m not a native Maryland’er but have been here for many years and adopted Baltimore as my home. It’s been a great place to raise my two boys, we’ve got awesome restaurants, and the absolute best football team in the NFL!  I’m looking forward to sharing stories and industry insights from the world of hospitality and interactive technology.

Grant Lorimer    

 Thank you for taking the time to read through the bio’s section. As you can see, we are a diverse group with a melting pot of professional and worldly experience in different areas that adds that secret ingredient to our products. 

My story in technology started went I was born. My father had a little software development company that focused on logistics and inventory management running on SCO Unix. I still remember fondly, at a very young age, feeding those punch cards and playing on my Sinclair zx81 (Pre-Commodore 64). Through the years my interest in technology never waned and I pursued a career in all things technical from development, sales, installations, administration and management. 

My career in hospitality essentially started with MICROS in early 2003 as a Systems installer for our hotel implementations group, traveling the continent, converting V6 sites from Novell to Windows and V7 from Clipper to Oracle. Back then OPERA was still finding it’s foothold with the market but I think we can all agree that it’s been found.  Today, I work with a team of exceptional people, from Naples, FL to Columbia MD, who work with a single vision to ensure that our products are delivered to our customers in a timely and professional manner. We are all so proud of what the OPERA Enterprise Suite has become and where it is going. 

When I am not in the office, I like to spend my free time with my family, chasing birdies and riding my Harley.   Living in Naples, FL allows me to do this all year round. 

David Mulhall    

Twenty two years with MICROS helps me appreciate how much technology has changed and revolutionized the hospitality industry.  I remember standing on the floor of the New York Hotel and Restaurant Show and using a cell phone the size of a small shoebox for the first time.  Now you can pay your check on a cell phone that is barely larger than a credit card.  I remember MICROS before there was a micros.com or a social media strategy.

As a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park New York, I get to apply my education and life experiences to help customers address their business objectives each and every day.  This has made for a very rewarding career choice and I look forward to continuing my journey for many years to come.

When not working…I live with my wife and our three terrific kids in South Florida, an.d pursue my passion for amazing culinary delights

Thank you for taking the time to read my bio.  After my years at Babson College and a few years of hustling at various positions in the restaurant business, I was introduced to the Hospitality Point-of-Sale business and I mentally thank that person who made that introduction nearly every day. I didn’t start in the restaurant POS solution business with MICROS, but I always knew I wanted to be here. And 10+ years later, I’m very excited to be contributing to this blog in any way I can!

It’s always interesting to me to hear how some people stumble through answering the simple question; “so what do you do and who do you work for?” In the course of the past 10+ years my answer has dramatically shifted. I started with “you know those touchscreen cash register things that the servers use to place orders in restaurants…I sell those” and have moved to “I help deliver cloud based technology and marketing solutions from MICROS to today’s restaurant entrepreneur to help them succeed in today’s restaurant climate and get to work with some of the best operators in the business!”

When I’m not at work you’ll find me hunting that elusive 50+ lb. Striped Bass somewhere on the New England shore, hunting the seemingly more elusive (at least for me) eagle on the golf course, or enthusiastically cheering on one of our two children with my wife while they play the sport of the season.

For those of you that have either spoken to or met me before, you’ll already know that I choose to have a great day, every day and I encourage you to do the same…before someone chooses for you!

Hi everyone!  I first encountered MICROS as a user of Fidelio v4.  I was hooked by the power and simplicity of Fidelio, compared to other Property Management Systems I had used, and in 1998 I joined MICROS as an installer of Fidelio PMS Version 6.  I believe my initial reaction at the orientation in Beltsville,MD was something like “Wait…it goes up to Version 6?  How old was the one I was using?  There was a 5?!”

In 2000, I joined the fledgling OPERA PMS project, and participated in many of the initial installations prior to the release of Opera v1.0.  That was back when an “upgrade” consisted of a couple of .zip files from Development, and the manual changing of a version number.  Like many of the “Opera old timers”, I’ve seen the product suite come a long way from the days of Oracle Thick Client and the “Concurrent Print Manager”, to become the premier choice for hotels and resorts of all sizes, markets, and service levels worldwide.

In my life before MICROS, (there was one?), I worked in hotels in Boston, Massachusetts, Orlando, Florida, and Fairbanks, Alaska, and spent 8 years as a professional radio announcer.  I’m currently working on the next generation of the Opera Enterprise Solution as a Product Manager for the OPERA 9 Development Team in Naples, Florida, and hope to someday have some spare time to brag about in a bio

Costin Rizan     

Hello everyone, my background is on the software development side. In the past, I have developed software for the Canadian Human Rights Commission, aluminum giant Rio Tinto Alcan, telecom Companies such as Shaw here in Canada and of course, the hospitality industry. I have worked on several platforms, .NET, JAVA etc but I am afraid that naming them all would be way too boring for this bio…. :)

While I never actually worked in a hotel, my wife has, for 13 years. I think she has helped me become a better, more rounded, hospitality software designer and developer overall. She also says my short 2 month stint at a fast food joint, when I was 16, does not qualify me as having any restaurant industry experience. Oh well…

Seriously, though, I really enjoyed the time spent in our Naples’ development office. Did I mention it is in Naples, Florida? Working there between 2000 and 2004 on our core OPERA products and several cool new interfaces was a lot of fun.

I now work in our OPERA Global Technical Services division where I am lucky enough to work with our customers firsthand. It really is quite interesting to see our customers use our software and work with them to make it better and evolve it over time.

So, whether you need a script done, a custom report written a full blown application developed or a Facebook fan page integrated into your reservation system, I can help. Oh yes, also get in touch if your Gaming interface is acting funny!

Ed Rothenberg    

Hi Folks, I’ve been with MICROS for over 18 years now and I’ve worked in various departments including customer service, sales and product development. Before I joined MICROS I spent about 12 years in the restaurant and catering business. So in my work life, I’ve been able to experience restaurant technology from the point of view of an end-user as well as a vendor. I’ve seen 30 years of evolution in how systems are used to make restaurants run better and more profitably. I’m looking forward to the few years, where we are all anticipating how cloud and mobile technologies will further help restaurants connect with customers and make them feel like invited guests. 

My education background includes a BA in Government and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland (Go Terps!) and an Executive MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. I’m a big believer in continued education and taking a broad view of other industries and seeing what can be leveraged in hospitality. 

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with wife and 2 young daughters where we live in Montgomery County, Maryland.  I also enjoy playing guitar, working out, and riding my Harley. 

Sophie Talbot    

Hi, I’ve been working for MICROS for years and years :) (Wellsince 2000).  I was initially hired to do Revenue management installations over in Europe, however changed from yield systems to  our OPERA Enterprise systems in 2004 and have been involved there ever since. I moved over to the US in 2008 and as Director of Central systems I assist getting customers up and running on our CRS/CRM/Web/GDS/ADS and Business Intelligence solutions. I graduated from Oxford Brookes University in the UK with a HCIMA professional diploma in Hotel, Catering and Institutional management. 

I have been a hotelier since my first ever banqueting job at 16 years old and prior to MICROS worked in pretty much every job in hotels as I worked my way up the ladder – from Junior Assistant Manager – to Revenue Management.

Chad Weiner 

Hello and welcome to Meet the Experts! First off, I would like to share how proud I am to have been selected as the Stadium/Arena contributor to this MICROS Blog. You see, I didn’t start my career with MICROS. Before joining the company, I was employed by a much smaller company that focused exclusively on the Stadium/Arena market. I always remember wondering why we only provided solutions for just one market. I grew to realize that if I wanted to extend my talent and reach to other markets, I should join forces with a company that does it all. Fast forward 5 years and low and behold, MICROS makes an acquisition play for that small company. And, here I am today, a proud member of the MICROS team.  

As someone who has been in the industry for 10+ years, I’m always energized when it comes to finding solutions for our customers. It’s gratifying when we can use technology to answer the call to operational challenges. I am even more energized to share these experiences and tips with you.  

When I’m not working, I love spending time with my (soon-to-be expanding) family and cultivating my passion for cooking exquisite cuisine and entertaining family and friends.

Greetings Guv’nor

Broomie here your cheery Chimney sweep CTO you inherited from the Torex acquisition. I was born a very long time ago in a faraway land in London’s East End (Downtown/Inner City).
I was fortunate to begin work with computers in the relatively early days and was exposed to Minicomputers like NCR 200, PDP 11s and so forth. I could not believe people paid you money to work with these systems – it was so much fun.

Previous convictions have been mightily diverse from writing Software in Industrial companies like Philips, to introducing digital print and UK National newspaper The Guardian and Observer. Most exciting was the very early days of the Internet when I got the first email to the editor working for any paper! The Editor’s reaction was  < Posh English accent> ” What exactly IS an email” </Posh English Accent>

Most recently I created Kachng MicrosCloudPos a html5 Ruby on Rails Saas product, Snapper (patent) RoR Social Campaign manager linked to POS (patent) and Pay at Ppump (patent) pay and manage Petrol(gas) using mobile phone.

Finally I have introduced SOA principles and a great fan of Agile, TDD , Kanban and Open Source and heh just getting it done.

That’s enough about me its even sending em into a coma!

Hi Everyone and thank you for reading my bio.  Sixteen years ago I was fortunate enough to join Micros as a Fidelio PMS V5 Installation Specialist.  I continued to install both Fidelio V5 and V6 until I was selected to begin the testing and pilot of first OPERA installation in the world!  Let me just say – WOW WHAT A RIDE!!!  It’s been non-stop fun ever since :)

In 2006 I moved into the position of Program Manager for North America and was responsible for overseeing the software enhancement process, regional product releases, vendor certification, and global deployment of OPERA for some of our major accounts.  Sounds fancy doesn’t it but I missed interacting with actual hotels and seeing what was happening in the field so in late 2010 I moved back to our Implementations department as a Senior Implementations Consultant.

Now I’m traveling 90% of the year doing what I do best – making sure that you my clients get the most out of OPERA!  Frequently I get asked why I’ve stayed at MICROS so long.   My answer is always the same – why would I leave when I have the best product on the market?  I work for the best company and I have the best bosses in the world!  

When I’m not traveling you’ll find me in Colorado working out, hiking or planning a vacation to some random place in the world because frankly there’s just too much to see in this world not to!

    Its nice to read about people who are passionate about their jobs
    and especially the company they work for.
    I’m in the POS field supporting store systems and hardware.
    System configuration and installation and would really love
    to be on Micro team preferably in New York. 15 West 37th Street.
    Any direction/suggestions will be more than appreciated.
