This is the second edition of MICROS’ monthly “CTO Corner”. At the end of every month one of our 3 CTO’s will be giving you their insights into technology, the industry, and how it affects your business.
Over the past few years there has been a huge proliferation of new “eWallet” apps that allow customers to make in-person purchases with their smartphones. You have TabbedOut, you have Google Wallet, Isis, Square, etc., etc., and even MICROS’ own stored-value solution: iCard Mobile Wallet. Some of these apps are well suited for quick service restaurants; others to table service, bars, hotels and traditional retail. Some of these apps are “cloud-based” and work over the Internet, some work via scanning of QR codes or via SMS texting and others allow you to “tap-and-pay” via NFC reader. There are lots of options here.
If you are overwhelmed with all of the options, news and hype, welcome to the club! All kidding aside, several of these great and exciting consumer facing payment technologies are already in use with many MICROS customers.
Last week I was enjoying dinner at a local restaurant with my family and some friends. As we got up to leave, my daughter asked me “aren’t we going to pay our tab?” She was accustomed to the ritual of flagging down the server, asking for tab, entering the tip, processing the credit card, etc. As we were walking out the door, I told her that the restaurant was a MICROS customer that accepts mobile payments via TabbedOut and that I had it all handled from my iPhone. She then asked the obvious question…”why don’t we pay that way at every everywhere?” I laughed and said “download the app to your Droid and it will guide you to other establishments that have opted-in to the service.” Funny how the millennial’s are a couple steps behind us parents in many ways.
As CTO of MICROS, I stay abreast of the latest technology trends…and if they are real, different and can make an impact (can you say “innovative”??), adopt them within the MICROS ecosystem as fast as possible. Sometimes we build it ourselves, sometimes we partner.
The good news as it relates to eWallets and mobile payments, MICROS has great growing list of partners. And customers can chose to accept more than one brand of eWallet as a payment source, in a similar way that customers support many different types of credit and gift cards.
MICROS has always been completely agnostic when it comes to payment devices and payment process and we will continue our tradition of “Swiss neutrality” strategy into the eWallet and smartphone-based payment space. We don’t know who the winners and losers will be, however rest assured that we are open and committed to partner/interface with any payment products (mobile or otherwise) that our customers wish to utilize.
