Underneath all the news of the Timeline redesign of brand pages, an overlooked but potentially very powerful little feature was added to the admin side of updated Facebook pages: the ability to review fan posts before they go public. This feature allows page owners the opportunity to read through and vet fan comments and posts before they are visible on the page.
For organizations that are already overwhelmed with monitoring and managing various social presences, this news should come as a welcome relief. For organizations looking to avoid public crises, this will become extremely helpful.
How to activate post moderation: (Note: This feature is only accessible by brands that have already activated the Timeline format.)
- Click on Admin Panel at the top right of the page
- Once the panel expands, go to the top and click on ‘Manage’ and ‘Edit page’ from the drop down menu
- Click over to the ‘Manage Permissions’ section and check out the ‘Post Visibility’ section. Notice something new? “Only show posts by X and friend activity on your Page until reviewed by an admin”
- Go ahead and click the box to enable it now
Although this moderation feature is beneficial, I personally would not recommend doing it unless absolutely necessary. One of Facebook’s main benefits is in driving open and honest conversations about your brand within your Facebook community. Rather than focusing on controlling everything, try nurturing your community and driving your message through strong content and encouraging posts from fans. If you’re able to build a thriving community, you won’t need to moderate everything – the community will do it for you.
